Passenger Etiquette

Its once again time for my bi-monthly rant on manners and etiquette. This morning I noticed on the subway multiple signs outlining rules for Passenger Etiquette. These signs are augmented with cartoon illustrations of these pearls of wisdom. For instance:

Additional suggestions include:
- Practice cell phone courtesy by setting ring tones to vibrate, using an inside voice
and avoiding two-way talk
- Use earphones or headphones for your listening pleasure; set on low
- Your safety and comfort are important. Honor requests from operators or other SEPTA
staff
- When standing, do not block doors
- No smoking on vehicles or at stations
- Drink only from containers with sturdy, resealable lids. No open containers or cans
- Cooked or prepared foods don’t mix with transit travel
- Take your meal home to eat
- Light, small snacks are OK. No trash please
- Keep SEPTA clean. Dispose of trash and recyclables properly

My favorite happens to be "use your inside voice" while on a cell phone.

So basically they're telling Philadelphians to stop acting like assholes... riight. Like that's gonna happen. Oh, and have I mentioned that the city government is in imminent danger of collapsing thanks to poor financial management, yet there seems to be money to put up cartoon signs, printed in color no less!... well, I've said enough, I'll let you draw your own conclusions....

I'm baaaackk!

Whew, it has only been about 10 days, but so much has happened!

We went to my parents' house in VA for the better part of last week and spent lots of quality time with my parents and Mr. F's mom. We went swimming and Aidan even got a little tan! He had a ball watching the big kids swimming and tried as hard as he could to kick his legs and move his arms...he even made a valiant attempt to put his face in the water! Needless to say, the kid looooves bath time!

While at home my college roommate came to visit with her daughter to celebrate my birthday. We had a blast and once again realized how much we wish we lived near each other. Richmond and Philly just arent that close :( I love my friends in Philly, but I could really use a friend or two who has a kid, someone who would understand that an offer to get drinks at 9pm on a Thursday night just wont be accepted without a 3 day advance notice (if that) or there is nothing impromptu happening near nap or bedtime. Sighhh.

Aidan has also learned how to do "So Big". Let me just say, its the most adorable thing I've ever seen. You say, "Aidan, how big are you?" and this chubby little arms shoot up as he waits for you to say "So Big!" Which, of course, is immediately followed by a round of clapping initiated by him in celebration of his accomplishment. every time. I'll work on getting video of that :)

This past weekend I also headed down to DC for a bridal shower and despite arriving over an hour late, thank you Philly traffic, I had a great dinner and caught up with old friends. And who can resist a pumpkin ale beer?

For my birthday, Mr. F really outdid himself this year. He bought me a food processor! I am soooo excited. He sheepishly gave it to me promising there would be sentimental gifts in the future when we have an income, but I think last night I proved just how happy I was to have it, making him time me chop whole peppers and onions. I even made fresh guac. I. am. in. love. (with him and the processor!)

Finally, I found out I didnt get either job I interviewed for and will be staying home full time with Aidan. I'm so excited, but cant shake the guilty feeling of having this great degree and not using it, not to mention the financial strain...but I am just going to focus on what a blessing I've been given with this gift of time with my son. Not to mention I know our house will be a great deal calmer with only one of us working full time.

So, thats the quick update, at least all that I can remember right now. Happy Monday, everyone!

Getting out of dodge

Its that time of the summer where the humidity is unbearable and our dinky window ac units just can run any harder and our wallets cant handle the exorbitant electric bill to keep them pumping so we're outa here for a few days :) Per our family reunion experience, we're heading out tonight after bath time with at least one of us (maybe more) in our pj's headed for dreamland. See you on the flip side!

9 months

No, I'm not pregnant...I just realized how misleading that title could be. Today is actually Aidan's 9 month birthday!! HOLY COW! First of all, there is no way 9 months could go so fast. Secondly, how is it possible I have a 9 mo old? I mean, seriously!? So to celebrate here are some pictures from the past 9 mos.

The assignment I choose to accept

So this is my first MamaKat writing assignment and finally decided after reading her prompts for months, it was time I jumped in… so here goes:

My favorite things I'd include in a giveaway:

1. a gift card to Target. I mean, no matter how much I try to stay to my list, Target has this amazing ability to suck the life and money out of my wallet…

2. Johnson and Johnson bath for the baby, in multiple varieties. We love love love the lavender bedtime complimented by the lavender lotion. Most recently we discovered the soothing vapors, which smells like Vics Vapor rub and works like a charm to clear up baby (and mom’s!) nasal passages, ensuring a good night sleep for all.

3. My BPA free nalgene bottle. I go NOWHERE without it. Of course the BPA free is good for me and using a refillable water bottle good is for the environment and my wallet. All around goodness!

4. Dove Silk dark chocolate. Need I say more?

5. Potbelly’s breakfast sandwiches… layers of delicious ham, swiss cheese, mushrooms and hotpeppers on a toasted bagel. OH.MY.GOD. followed immediately by a workout dvd ;)

6. Faux Pashmina scarves (in any color). The versatility of these is phenomenal. Recently I’ve been keeping one at my desk at work because someone in the office is either going through menopause or they just like instigating a battle at the thermostat. Either way, its pushing 100 outside and I’m bundled up inside. But at least I look cute, and fashionable!

Thanks MamaKat, I’ll try to write more often! :)

Dear Jillian Michaels,

Last night I moved from your level one workout to level two. I was huffing and puffing, doing all of the exercises in their easier, modified executions and am still slightly weak this morning. Thank you for kicking my ass as promised. My pants already fit better.

See you tonight,

Jenna

PS. I just got this cool SiteMeter feature hooked up to my blog and realized so many more people are checking in than I knew! So, dont be a stranger! Leave a comment or just say hello :)

Who will speak for these?

Today during my lunch I was walking down Market Street in Philly running errands. I try in general to avoid Market St. for many reasons; its crowded, people tend to hang out with no real place to go while crowding the sidewalk, and the traffic is heavy. Unfortunately, today's errands demanded a stroll down Market...and I came back to work pretty upset.

As a mother, and more importantly, as a human being, I was disgusted by the treatment of the little children by their care takers. It is so hot out and not one of them had a hat, there was a baby in hysterics (not a toddler throwing a temper tantrum) and the mother didnt give a damn about the kid only to yell at her to "shut up." Please, enlighten me how yelling at a 7 mo old is going to get her to be quiet. How about picking her up, trying to comfort her with soft words and a hug? I just dont understand.

I just dont understand how people can treat each other so terribly, how a mother can harm her child, how a family can abandon one of their own in need. It took all that I had not to walk up and just take that child home with me. I've always believed in God, sometimes with more faithfulness than others, but I can honestly say I've never prayed so much since I've become a mother. I pray for my own family, for my child, and all of God's children. I pray that I'll be able to make a difference, even if I'm not sure how to do that just yet. Maybe this is a start.
